Don’t Call Me Grandma
Don’t EVER call me grandma! I feel entirely too young to be a grandma right now. Then again, I will be 40 once the baby is born. That does make me feel a bit better about this. Being a grandparent was something I expected to come much later in life. Whilst your grandparents might prefer a simple to use cell phone, I feel like I’m still down with the kids!
I could see the fear in her eyes. Her boyfriend just stood by and waited for my reaction. I can only imagine what my reaction looked like to the both of them. I immediately walked back to the house and just sat in my room. Somehow, by the next day it just resonated with me. She didn’t do drugs, she finished high school, and she beat me! I had her when I was 18 and had barely graduated high school.
It wasn’t until the next day that it finally started to sink in. I was going to be a grandma. The one thing I knew for sure is that I would NOT be called grandma.f
Meghann had just introduced me to her boyfriend, William. The three of us were walking out to her car and I patted her belly because it looked a little rounder than usual.
Me “You look pregnant.”
Her “What? You always say that!”
Me “You look bigger than I am used to.”
Me “What? Are you pregnant?”
Her “We were going to wait to tell you until we had a doctor appointment.”
Me “How far along are you?”
Her “Mom, I don’t know anything yet!”
Me ” I need time to process this, goodbye”
I could see the fear in her eyes. Her boyfriend just stood by and waited for my reaction. I can only imagine what my reaction looked like to the both of them. I immediately walked back to the house and just sat in my room.

What are some options other than grandma? My initial thought was the Polish word for grandmother, BABCIA. There is NO way a baby could pronounce that. Meghann’s grandmother has dibs on Nana and I didn’t care for that anyway. I liked GiGi, YaYa, and Noni but MIMI is the winner. To my grandchildren I will be MIMI. (In my mind I am FABULOUS like Mariah Carey)
Today we got to see the little monkey. He looks like a blob of nothingness. Do you see what I just did there? Will is convinced it is a girl, Nana is convinced it is a girl and I am hoping for a boy. I will call him monkey until we find out differently.
I have already started pinning on Pinterest and planning for the baby shower. Nana and I get to plan that! I am waiting to buy anything but I have found so much that I like. Waiting is proving to be very difficult.
I MUST remember that this is NOT my child and my daughter will put me in my place if I get too out of control.
**ps. Meghann, I am so proud of you and wish you nothing but happiness and joy with your new life. William, I am happy to welcome you into our family and hope you can put up with Meg and her moodiness. I love you guys!
